30 rolls, maybe more if I have time
Some shrubbery (depending on salad still left)

Cream (the same, I have no cow)
I should have time to make an apple chutney
Walnut and plum tart
And booze

I have to offer walnuts:-though they are still lightly ripe, apples, some chard. Anyone have onions? J, can a borrow some eggs, as my six ladies are on strike?

I do have something I could create with pototoes, and much salad, also once I have scaled the tree for nuts, I can make a nut and plum tart. Trees hold no worries for me, I bounce, although suffer a little the next day.

Are the bunnies in Bungay worth another shot...otherwise it could be time to go large and try go hunting in Banham zoo?

Hello Fellow Hunters!

Firstly congrats to James following the birth of Rosie Mae Henderson!

Tonight I had a most strange visit to the pub! As walked past the pub with the dog (whilst listening to music) the landlord actually ran out and I had a blur on the edge on my vision.... the landlord (Binzy) was trying to call me into the pub.... honestly!

So, having gone into the pub. I am now in possession of a wine box filled with very dead pigeons – around 15 or so.

They need plucking etc .... and I’d like some company as they should be done asap and they of a good number.

Is anyone around to help - NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED? That might be able to spare an hour or two tomorrow eve or Friday eve to help?

(James I understand having just moved into the village you may be worried ;-) but its just preparing local produce from the local area for a good feast)

Anyways, who’s about for a severe plucking?

ALSO and importantly I was wondering if anyone can confirm date of fishing trip or trips? Is it booked and who is confirmed if booked?

Ok Septemeber is nearly here and the summer is almost over

OK so I know it's a way away - BUT although there have been some rumors of the valiant men folk going fishing - thus far bugger all has happened! Might I suggest that to catch fish we might need to be near water and preferably near water and using fishing rods (I hear this helps).

I only mention this as it may be prudent to make some initial enquires and then report said findings at suitable venue. Namely the PUB.

Oh Deah oh dear

Ok all we now have one deer with 5 legs! It's true!

Decorations, Country and Western and Oh la!

Does anyone have any nautical decorations, for the shed I have been crafting with cardboard and wrapping foil... but wondered if there might be any borrowable items - such a life jackets (hint WT) or any netting etc.

I can assure you that any borrowed items will be nailed carefully to the walls and ceiling of the barn and returned promptly...

On a further note of musical importance, does anyone have country and western albums? or Hawaii beach music stylii albums?

The men folk bang their drums

In a secret location some where in the village of Rocklands, at the back of DGs house in his secret workshop, 3 of the men folk constructed 2 drums and a self contained drum oven with (and get this) hinged door and lock fastening. Yeah, you know wha Im sayin - this is some mean feather plucker of an oven.

We are obviously very proud and so wish to bang the drum on our success!

Photos which we know will excite all who look at them are soon to follow. These show the various stages of metalwork construction.

Anyone wishing to know more about the variants and metal fatigue stresses or indeed the sheer stress on cubic close packed lattice iron below 800 degrees centigrade feel free to email me. We had great discussions over the probable variants that may happen to the drum during cooking. Obviously we know its a steel drum, but the iron ferrous changes only affect the iron within the steel drum (and not the steel).

Having heartily debated this and other equally important design considerations we cut the end out and stuck it back with a hinge and then adjourned for a well earned double pint with a 4th fellow hunter offering much praise and considered drum banging.

The oven will also appearing on its own rather risque calendar. Pre order copies are available from Feb 2010?!

Sorry can't make tonight of to Palma. I'll see if I can scrape some exotic creatures of the tarmac when I get there.

Steel drums and percussion

A big thank you to Dave for the supply of two steel drums.

I was going to attempt making an oven to slow roast fodder from one and then use the other as a two piece combination set brazier/steel drum. Does anyone have anything to cut steel? I also need to add a hinge so may be after some techynickle advice as blutack may (though I might be wrong) not hold under the high temperatures required for cooking...
I was hoping to create a buried oven of sorts.



I also imagine that shipwrecked damsels and hunters would perhaps while away the time waiting to light the beacon fire, with some form of music. I'd be interested to see if we can create simple instruments for our gatherer tribe fireside. Sould be a chortle (which i think makes a superb name for an instrument)...

Elderflower Surprise

I have elderflower cordial too, although I cannot promise to source the water to dilute it with from a naturally carbonated stream. Also good with gin...Saucy Sassy Skull Snapper got any?

Can I make a plea that we take lots of photos of the gathering (did anyone take any last year?) so we can sell them to coffee-table magazines and fund our self-sufficiency dream/nightmare (delete as appropriate).

Decorative rambles

Now my dearest darling Vixster that's one hole too many! You crazy wild woman! Could Ridgeon's please be here before noon on Sat - the crane will be arriving arriving at 12.06 hrs precisely! The erection must be up by 15.00hrs - that's when everybody's coming - N'est pas? re the bales - the wheat bales are free of charge - the barley @£1.50 / bale. Which is it to be? And my beautiful, lonely dog is eating the kitchen right now - she's called - MABEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and her lead is on the table! (reminder enough?) love xxxxx

The hunters return from Whitby and look forward to productive evenings out

Great time had by all and I hope some photos will follow.

You should see the one of Clive having battled for hours and single handedly landing what can only be described as a Terrific Turbot!

Much fun was had over a stunning breakfast listening to the fellow fishermen (not us) debate old sailors favourite questions of contemplation on board a boat such as "if a man says something witty & insightful, but there is no woman around to hear it, is he still wrong?" or "why are wrong numbers never engaged" - which tenuously links to congratulating Stewart and Sam on their engagement! Congrats !!! (great link there)

The catch was a superb haul! Well done all and thanks from us all to DG and SG for their organisation of said trip. Photos will follow v soon.

OK all, Shipwreck! (Including Pirates and or similar is set .... "ah haaa, shiver me timbers, pieces of eight" or indeed anything Nautical - is set as the theme for this years gathering ...

Hey all!

The 26th is approaching as fast as a speeding express train filled with cod and driven by wide eyed smacked up crayfish on well oiled tracks?!

erm anyway....

So, with time moving on it's time to get the "gatherers a gathering" please. Who can make a trip to the farm one evening next week - volunteers are required? The mission - to get pigeons and plenty of them and anything else that moves of course.

Other missions that need arranging involve ducks/geese, rabbits, fungi fodder and more...

A final pint would be a good idea to ensure we are on track with our meticulous planning and execution of aforementioned strategies.

Invites will be ready by mid week.

Can anyone also help in the early part of next week getting a very kindly donated crop of grapes. Ivor I think you may have a press? If so, might we be able to use that thus saving veruccad feet of children being used in a wheelie bin as previously planned by the committee. Thanks to Karen K for the grapes - they are grapefully accepted!

Menu - can we add what we are intending to prepare this year so some dishes make the invite?

PLEASE KEEP EYES PEELED for puffballs and the like whilst driving around.

Also please be careful - best not approach any stolen skodas with crayfish at the wheel. You never know what the outcome might be.

With some gusto a few hunters had a meet/drinking, the main results of said drink/meeting were as follows.

• We all agreed we were there (after some time)
• We also agreed that some hunters were not - and that was our own fault (being hunters not superb on organisation)

We also spent some time debating The Times articles about Crayfish, which coincidentally this weekend (The Times that is) has a superb photo set including a golden bottom from the Bond films! (Noted for you M.McA)

Golden bottoms aside, we progressed to serious matters...

We (the Male folk of Rocklands) need to choose. between..

• obligatory bullet points for no reason
• fishing from Whitby (North Yorkshire - where according to Radio 5 there are Nuclear tests)
• fishing from the South coast (DG has family living locally there to provide a bed before an early start)
• fishing in France (again somewhere to sleep free of charge)
• fishing on our local coast

A few dates were mentioned, any offer of a reminder of any dates mentioned would help me report back... as I can only remember a hazey end of summer time date time thingy.

A blog from the past is worth two in the outback

Just a thought, with the economy enjoying its wondrous decline.... should we not reconvene sometime before mass hysteria and pillaging breaks out, with a Credit Crunch Dinner Party? Obviously a black tie  or fancy dress event. 

If anyone is up willing to think beyond Christmas I was thinking that this might be just the ticket after over indulgences. 

The menu would be a throw back to yesteryear with such classics as 

• Corned beef hash - served with eggy bread florets - 
• Noodle of the Pot on a bed of noodles (potted)
• Fricassee of porridge

As for the drinks then perhaps a savvy tipple of  Thunderbird and Blue Nun to remember when £10 was worth £10 and not £1.74?

A feast for your eyes

Many congratulations to the oh so manly hunters of Rocklands. I think we can safely say it was a feast of medievally epic proportions, which dazzled all who came. A list of all culinary delights must be created, including the many varied drinks, desserts, sauces and ...

Now we need to get press coverage, letters must be sent, Mrs Decorative Gatherette has had this brillaint idea.

One request for next year, can we hold it on the Saturday? so that wounded heads can be nursed, without having to face the cold light of a school morning.

Oh, and finally a picture of garlic., as I neglected to photo any feast frolics, or wonderfully decorative welly-clad beauties.

Just realised we probably need a fishing licence to be legal. Not that it has stopped some of the activities that have been undertaken so far..

Will investigate this mornin and report back.

It would be a great shame if the venue for the great event was switched at the last minute.

Roadblock move over - Mrs D Gatherette is here!

Whilst the troglodytes are boozing - oops, planning the finer details of the menus - at the local inn, I thought it high time I showed my hubby that I have moved on from windows 1864 and that blogging (a new verb?) is not his sole domain. Rest assured though, my pc competency does not extend to attaching photos of dismembered body parts on polystyrene trays! or more sadly, pigeons in trainers at the starting post!

Tonight, the men folk are (alledgedly) (Roadblock did take his Filofax planner with him - last opened in 2006) at the crux of deciding how to create a fabulous table of fine fayre with all their labours of love, putting to use the various cooking pots / methods they have at their disposal. Bonne Chance!

So it's just for me to say - yippeeeeeeee! I know we are all looking forward to Sunday 3pm - it's going to be an inaurguration to be remembered!

Practical note - all bring your own plates and cutlery.

And to the decorative contingency, after flipping through a few recipe books this eve, I'm hoping to make something along the tomato flan line. Any other vege thoughts?

Not being a complete carnivorous type, I think we should take a head count, so to speak on the available vegs. I do have lots of garlic, so there will be no problems with vampires, despite the abundance of dripping corpses. I am thinking sorrel souffle, eggplant omlette...

Sadness for pigeon fans in a flap as 20 arrive today for casserole

Many heavy hearts were mourning today when news broke that 20 pigeons have been donated by a farmer for our communal pot. It would be fair to say that controversy took wing. One testimonial made through tearful eyes was from F.E. Athers who said - "Young Derek had shown such promise as a sporting pigeon in the Pigeolympics last month in China, it's a real shame. He was at the top of his sport having flown through the heats to be right up there at the top of the pecking order. "

The farmer was quoted as saying "I wont get my feathers ruffled over this one, I'm glad they serve some use"

Following a nasty accident with a trap I made from balsa wood, elastic bands and pencil sharpener blades, I take some pleasure remembering the old phrase "every cloud has a silver lining". It is all a question of belief really, isn't it? I believed it would happen...sometime, maybe not this year. I am proved soooo mistaken . All this muscle flexing, posturing in cagoules, the sweating of the eyebrows and the numerous, tragic, beers lost in a good cause.

So roll on the 21st (this year) of September, let the men folk flaunt their doughtiness, mettle, valiance and virility. I fully expect exhibitions of touching.....or at least touching emotionality.

Following sober decision making last night, the men folk are requesting some help from the Ladies. Votes were taken and it was agreed that the Lady folk should add much to the event with their inclusion. Any ideas on activities are warmly welcomed or rudely laughed out. One idea was a mass blackberry picking session, as was the creation of some crumble pies. It was also suggested (not by me) that on the day the Ladies could arrange for an apple press to become available and make cider supplies for the Men folk.

Pub update

Following a rather impromptu evening of consolidated support of the local economy a few decisions were made. The only problem is remembering them, perhaps?

There was agreement on activity to take place. Namely that that this Friday (subject to permission from a local land owner) there will be a rabbit hunt. I expect this will be a late event, and final details will be posted closer to Friday.

The rough plan formulated is that those able to attend on Saturday will help McA ready his garden for our soirée (French - evening party). This means getting smokers, bbq's, party tents etc set up ready for Sunday as we will be fishing from 8am. 

DG's offering of Venison was certainly impressive and I look forward to partaking. Perhaps DG might bring his bazooka fishing, just incase it's needed?

I will be chasing to get some beer from Buffy. The Hollyberry is a superb beer that will go down well.

There was some talk of creating a "Kitty" - this was in a financial sense and not finding one to cook I hasten to add. So, ideas on what we should all contribute are needed.

Stephanie has kindly offered to provide some Grumpy Grey Cider, and DG is to prepare some lethal Schnapps.

WT is gaining a smoker for the fish etc
